We’re Off To Cheltenham Races

If you like your horse racing over fences then this is the best week of the year for you and Prestbury Park in the Cotswolds will be where you are heading. Although most people had already made up their minds, today’s announcement from Kauto Star’s connections that he will run in the Gold Cup is the stuff of dreams. His trainer said that he schooled well at the weekend after a run out at Wincanton on Friday. In particular he said that he was foot perfect over the jumps. We all remember that it was a bit of unsteadiness over the jumps that slowed progress early on in his career, so it is promising to hear that injury has not affected his confidence or his timing. Although the horse is not the favourite for the race, he will be strongly backed by those who feel that he can do three Gold Cups before his career ends.

The course officials walked the course yesterday and they declared the going good and good to soft in places. However with higher temperatures over the weekend and clear skies forecast for the next few days it was decided to water the course. Not only is this better for horse safety but it will also favour the Irish raiding parties who have arrived with a strong field. One of the strongest contenders must be the Willie Mullins trained Hurricane Fly who runs in the Stan James. Although the gelding had a slow start to the season he has won his last seven Grade one races and he finished really well in January in the Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown. He won the Cheltenham race last year and has to be worth a punt if his price stays reasonable. The Irish had 13 winners last year and many people in the know say that this year’s field is even stronger.

Paul Nichols has never won this race but it is not for lack of trying. This year he has four runners and Zarakandar has to be the pick of the bunch. He impressed in a recent win at Newbury and is a horse that many feel has not reached anything like his peak in performance. He has won his four grade one runs and the fast pace of the race is certain to suit him. So if you are looking for horse racing tips on some home-grown talent then this could be worth a shot.

Cheltenham Punters Have Nervous Moments

Who would be a trainer at a time like this? You have the pressure of getting your mounts ready for your races and you have jockeys and owners to manage and please as well. Then the rumour mill starts and the phone starts to ring non-stop. First we had the issue with the Kauto Star fall and all the concern that surrounded that. It now turns out that he is making good progress and he is reported to have had two canters yesterday. He will have a run out on Friday after racing at Wincanton and punters will be able to see for themselves what sort of shape he will be in. Ruby Walsh will be on board and he will run with Mon Parraine. This will be the best chance that people will have to see what kind of shape he is in and how he goes under real conditions. It also means that Paul Nichols must be quite confident of his condition if he is willing to risk such a public outing.

Meanwhile the rumour mill has been busy churning out hot air about Long Run, the main rival for the Gold Cup. Some whispers started on the betting exchanges yesterday adn then some of the main bookies suspended their market while they checked out whether there was any substance to the rumours. When the markets came back up again  prices had drifted so not everyone is convinced that there was no problem.

According to reports from Nick Henderson the horse galloped well yesterday and there has been no concern about his fitness or welfare. Apparently his phone has been busy for the past 24 hours with people checking on the condition of his runner. The horse will continue with his preparations today and everything is going to plan.

The new guidance on the use of the whip in England came into force yesterday but there was not much drama to report. Jan Faltejsek picked up a four day ban at Newcastle, but elsewhere there were no reports of anyone else falling foul of the new rules. let’s hope that common sense continues to prevail on this one.

All Set For Cheltenham

Now that we are into March it really feels like the big festival is just around the corner. Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have seen all the news and speculation about Kauto Star and his recent heavy fall. I have to say I was quite surprised about the emotional reaction of quite a few people to the fact that he might not feature this year. The latest news after this weekend is that the horse is responding well to physio and that he went well in a 10 furlong canter. What that means for his form in a big challenge like the Gold Cup, only Paul Nichols and Clive Smith, the owner will be aware of.

As we spent  Sunday under rainy and snowy skies, the Irish fared much better. The weather has been dry for a few days and going at Leopardstown that was officially “good” but which was far drier than most people had anticipated. the course had organised for some of the talent that will feature in Cheltenham to be run over fences at the end of the days racing. However the dry ground meant that most trainers felt that it was too risky to school their horses over fences. Quite a few were run on the flat, but the chance for punters to see proposective winners in close to race conditions was missed.

Both Ruby Walsh and Barry Geraghty were on show at the weekend and both put in strong performances. Geraghty rode particularly well on Pittoni in the Ballsbridge Hurdle. The horse seemed to pull up lame at the end of the race, probably a victim of the hard ground. He features in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham and I fancy he might be worth a flutter if he is reported to have recovered in time.

Quel Esprit Makes His Mark

With Cheltenham just around the corner, many people are wondering what the main Irish challengers for the the Gold Cup are up to. This weekend at Leopardstown saw a very strong showing from Quel Esprit in the Hennessy. Trained by Willie Mullins, this horse was ridden by Ruby Walsh and came on strongly when urged on by the jockey, showing a turn of pace that we had not seen in previous years. This horse impressed in this outing and is undoubtably stronger this season than last. Bookies took note of the performance and his Gold Cup odds moved from 20/1 to 16/1.

That does not make him a real contender yet. One of the main questions that Mullins has to answer is who will get the ride at Cheltenham. Ruby Walsh is probably going to be on Kauto Star, a horse with a stronger run of pedigree and form coming into the race. Without his jockey from the weekend, several names have been mentioned, but no one is yet confirmed for the Gold Cup.

So while the horse jumped well at the weekend and he looks like he will be in with a shot, he will be up against a stronger field in Cheltenham and is likely to be an outside chance in the betting stakes and unlikely to feature in anyones racing tips.

Daily Horse Racing Tips

Good Daily Horse Racing Tips

Many fans of the sport look for daily horse racing tips that offer them a chance of winning. Most people prefer to pick winners with longer odds because the size of their winnings will be much larger, but punters should not reject short odds winners if they want good bets to place every single day.

At many smaller tracks there are often stand out horses in several races and they will be clear favourites. On average these horse will win just over one third of the time and so they are a decent bet. However there are some tracks and some classes of races where the favourite will win more often and when you are studying results you should look out for this. Many race goers ignore how favourites perform because of the low odds on offer. It is true that some favourites are given odds that are so low that they are below the probability of winning and they should be avoided. However you should also look at the payout of the bet and not just the odds of the horse. If you can still get a good cash outcome on the bet even though the horse is favourite then the bet is still worth placing. These low odds regular payout bets are the cornerstone of many successful betting strategies.

You should estimate the chances that a horse has of winning.  An average favourite has a one in three chance. For you to have a long run chance of being a winner, you need to be able to get more than £3 back for every £1 that you win. If you keep this rule in mind then backing favourites can be profitable.

Finding Daily Horse Racing Tips

Of course there are some horses that are favourites that should not be favourites. You should do your own homework on the field and pick a likely winner. If that horse turns out to be the bookies favourite too then fine, but never select the bet based on what the odds say or you will lose money.

Apart from favourites you should look for horses that stand out from the rest for several reasons. They may be coming down a lot in class, or they may have more pace or finishing than the rest of the field. Sometimes you notice that a good jockey is working with a horse that is a newcomer and would not usually be a ride he would be interested in. If there is no other clear performer in the field then the stand out horse is worth a good bet and would form the basis of one of your good daily racing tips.

If you can’t find a favourite that you can trust and make money on and there are no clear stand outs on that day, then don’t be tempted to bet. That is a sure fire way to lose money fast. Sometimes we have just got to step back and watch a race even if we are under pressure to come up with our daily horse racing tips.

Good Racing Tips

Good Racing Tips

There are many sites on the internet that offer good racing tips and a lot of them have a strong track record of giving race goers good inside information and analysis. However most experts agree that if you are to have a chance of winning money going racing then you need to understand the basic points of generating your own racing tips first. If you can spot a good bet yourself then you will recognise one when you get it from the internet.

When you have picked out a winner, then next thing that you need to decide is what to do about it. It may sound crazy to you but most people who make money at horse racing do it by being selective. That means not betting on a race when there is no clear winner. It also means not betting on a race where backing the winner will not make you a good payout. This may sound a bit daft to you but there is a sound logic to it.

daily horse racing tips

It is like investing money – it is all about risk and reward. A good punter will know how to estimate the chances of a horse winning. The clear favourite in a race will usually win about 33% of the time, so there is a 66% risk of losing your money. Therefore if you bet £10 on this horse, then you have to be able to see at least a £66 payout if you win the bet. Any lower payout and you will still celebrate a win and you will still collect money, but in the longer term the risk of losing means that you end up with less money than you started with. This is what makes a good racing tip.

There are many styles of betting, but the most successful people tend to bet little and often. The reason is that there are often no clear winners in a race. Most punters and journalists spend their time writing about featured races. These races have large prizes and they attract a large field. They are handicapped so as to even out the field. For these two reasons alone it is often impossible to pick a winner and therefore any bets on the races are high risk. Bookies offer high odds on these races and this will be attractive to punters, but there is a reason for those high odds and picking a winner is not something that you can do often. Smart punters keep their hands in their pockets before these races and they just sit back and enjoy the spectacle.

Every bet also has a transaction cost and so if you bet on every race then you will pay out more of these costs than someone who places larger, more secure but infrequent bets.

This is why being able to get your hands on good racing tips is quite important. It allows you to take a more long term view of you approach to betting and to manage so you have the best chance of winning. You can get access to our good racing tips by signing up here.

How To Get Free Horse Racing Tips

Most people know how to place a bet on a horse, but quite a few will assume that picking a winner is something that only experts and experienced racing punters can do. Here are a few steps to finding free horse racing tips.

1 Get to know your local racing course

Spend time getting to know the track layout. Go to meets and talk to local people who are familiar with it. Focus on things like how the ground responds to rain and cold weather. Which parts of the track are heaviest after rain and how does that affect the performances of different horses and riders. Where do horses at different distances need to accelerate and how do conditions affect them when they need to pick up speed.

2 Selecting A Likely Horse

For your next step in getting free horse racing tips you need to select a horse that is likely to win. Use the papers and you course program to look at the history for each horse. Obviously the horse with the best chance is one that has recent winning form and who is winning consistently. Make sure that the horse has been winning in the same class and over similar distances to the race that you are looking at. If the horse is stepping up a class then the history does not tell you much about how it will perform. However you can look at the track record of the trainer to see if you trust his judgement in moving the horse up a class.

Some programs will also list the performances of the jockey, the trainer and the owner of the horse and you can also use these to judge the chances of success.

You need to look at the odds that are set for the horse – an estimate of the chances of it winning. This will tell you how much you will get if you place a bet on a winning horse. If there is a horse with that is a sure fire winner, then it will have low odds and you will not make much profit. This is a safe bet for a beginner, but not a very satisfactory tip for a seasoned race goer who will seek out horse racing tips that offer higher odds.

3 Place Your Bet

This may seem like an obvious point to make, but when you have worked out your free horse racing tip, go and place your bet. Once you have done your homework you need to take action. So many people spend ages working it out and then bottle out of placing the bet before that race. Take action. You will not win every time, but you will learn more about horse racing with each race that you watch.

Do not wager any more money than you can afford to lose and try to keep some money back from your winning to fund future bets. This will make watching horse racing less stressful and more enjoyable.
